dear 18-year-old me: stop being an idiot

look, i know you think you’ve got it all figured out. you don’t. in fact, you’re about to make some wildly dumb decisions. but don’t worry, future me is here to drop some wisdom (that you’ll probably ignore).

so, here’s the cheat sheet for life before you go out and learn it the hard way.

here you go.

1. nobody cares as much as you think they do

remember that time you overanalyzed a text for 3 hours? yeah, no one else even remembers that conversation. everyone is too busy thinking about themselves to obsess over your awkward moments. embrace that freedom and stop overthinking.

2. say yes more, but not to everything

opportunities don’t come with neon signs. they come disguised as random invites, last-minute plans, or weird ideas. take more of them. but also, learn the power of no: especially when it comes to things that drain you.

3. being busy ≠ being productive

just because you’re tired doesn’t mean you did anything important. scrolling linkedin at 2am isn’t “hustle.” neither is taking 20 courses on coursera just to flex a certificate. work hard, but make sure it’s on stuff that actually moves the needle.

4. take care of your damn body

you only get one. stop treating it like a rental car. start lifting weights, drink more water, eat something green (no, mint chocolate chip ice cream doesn’t count), and sleep like it’s a priority, not a hobby.

5. people will leave, and that’s okay

friends will drift. relationships will end. not everyone is meant to be in your life forever, and that’s not a tragedy…it’s just life making room for better people.

6. your parents are actually right about some things

not all things (they still don’t get memes), but when they tell you to save money, be patient, and trust your gut? listen to them. future you will thank you.

7. take more pictures

you’ll want to remember these years. take photos, write things down, capture the dumb inside jokes. nostalgia hits hard when you realize you don’t remember half the good stuff.

8. rejection isn’t that deep

that job, that girl, that opportunity, you’re gonna miss out on a bunch. but here’s the trick: the people who win aren’t the ones who never fail, they’re just the ones who keep showing up. rejection isn’t a stop sign, it’s a redirection.

9. travel alone at least once

plan a random trip. learn how to sit at a restaurant alone without feeling weird. you’ll realize the world is bigger than your small circle of worries.

10. the “perfect plan” doesn’t exist

you’re going to change your mind. about careers, about love, about what kind of person you want to be. that’s a feature, not a bug.

so stop trying to map out every step. just take the next right one.

if 18-year-old me actually listened to this? life would’ve been easier. but let’s be real, he wouldn’t.

so, to anyone reading this at 18, trust me, or don’t. either way, you’ll figure it out.

quote to wrap it up: “mistakes make great stories. just don’t make the kind that require lawyers or hospital visits.”
